BC Agriculture

In 2001, 2.6 million hectares of BC was covered by just over 20,000 farms. Some of the agricultural activities in BC include dairy-farming, cattle-ranching, poultry-raising, as well as the farming of grain, outdoor fruits and vegetables, berries, grapes, greenhouse vegetables and mushrooms.

In the mid-to-late 1800s, as Europeans travelled up the fertile Fraser Valley in search of gold, many found the area's conditions perfect for agriculture. The Thompson/Okanagan and BC Interior was also ideal for fruit crops and livestock. Today, farms exists across BC, growing food for both domestic and export markets.
