Description

When Europeans were introduced to the Pacific Northwest’s Kwaguilth people in the 1700s, they discovered a culture grounded in a complex animist mythology, rich with cultivated artistry and strict communal traditions. In this program, participants explore the art of the Kwaguilth while working on their own design or carving project under the guidance of a professional native artist in the historical island community of Alert Bay. Speakers and fieldtrips will trace the history and mythology of the Kwaguilth people from pre-European contact to today, giving participants the chance to eat traditionally barbequed salmon, witness potlatch dances, study lore and storytelling, and learn the complex symbology behind Pacific Northwest art.
